Mea raweke - Tini whetu ki te rangi, ko te reo maori ki te whenua. - As the multitude of stars in the sky, so are the people speaking maori.

I rongo au ki tona reo kua tino papouri ia i te take ra. - I heard in his voice that he was very much saddened by the matter.

Ka kuru te tamaiti i a Mere. - The child struck Mere (Mere is actually affected by the punch).

Ka kuru te tamaiti ki a Mere. - The child hit out at Mere (Though the punch did not land, so Mere was not affected.)

Kei te titiro ratou i te pukapuka. - They are thoroughly studying/scrutinising the book.

Kei te titiro ratou ki te pukapuka. - They are looking at the book. The book is the thing to which they are directing their eyes.
